The Netherlands is situated in the north-west of Europe and is surrounded by the North-Sea, Germany and Belgium. It has about 17 millions inhabitants, who live on 41.526 km2. This means, it is relatively crowded. Despite being quite a small country, it is world’s sixth largest exporter and investor.
The Netherlands are known around the world for their constant battle with water. In addition to 450 kilometres of coastline, it also has many rivers and lakes. A lot of the land consists of flat polders which are ringed with dykes. Almost half of the country is below sea level and is artificially protected against high water levels. In the past, windmills helped to keep things dry. They are still a characteristic feature of the Dutch landscape.
The Netherlands have a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. The Prime Minister, the Queen and her ministers lead the government. Over five percent of the population currently has a foreign nationality. You can find more information and keyfigures on the Netherlands’ social and political organisation, population and economy on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, www.minbuza.nl.
There are approximately 69.000 farmers in the Netherlands, of wich 10.000 horticultural bussinesses.
The outdoor vegetable farms employ the most employees. For example, picking strawberries or digging asparagus. When looking for work, you have the best chance in this type of employment, because it takes a great number of people to harvest the crops. At the same time, this is a physically demanding job (digging or picking crops while kneeling), with varying weather conditions.
The most of these outdoor vegetables farms are located in the south of the Netherlands, a bit above Belgium.
In the north and east of the Netherlands, you find many dairy farms. The owners of these farms typically do all the work themselves and don’t have employees. Thus the likelihood of finding work with animals here is very small.
The west of Holland contains many greenhouse horticulture companies. These companies have also much work throughout the year.
